Longitudinal Hippocampus

The longitudinal hippocampus refers to the hippocampal formation considered along its anterior-posterior axis, an anatomical dimension that helps organize its structure and function within the brain. Neurons and connected circuits can differ across this axis, creating regional gradients in connectivity, activity, and contributions to memory, spatial processing, and emotional behavior. In neuroscience, studying the longitudinal hippocampus helps researchers relate hippocampal anatomy to distinct cognitive functions and understand how local circuits cooperate across regions. This framework supports research using anatomical mapping, electrophysiology, imaging, and lesion-based approaches to investigate memory organization, brain disorders, and changes associated with development or disease.

Sometimes we want to see how people change over time, as in studies of human development and lifespan. When we test the same group of individuals repeatedly over an extended period of time, we are conducting longitudinal research. Longitudinal research is a research design in which data-gathering is administered repeatedly over an extended period of time. For example, we may survey a group of individuals about their dietary habits at age 20, retest them a decade later at age 30, and then again...

In Vitro Recording of Theta Oscillations in the Mouse Hippocampus

2025

This video demonstrates the recording of rhythmic neuronal network activity, also known as theta oscillations, in an isolated hippocampus. Electrodes are inserted into various layers and spatial positions to detect and analyze theta oscillations. This shows the unique neuronal compositions and the connectivity of the neuronal network across different layers of the hippocampus.

Preparation of Organotypic Slice Cultures from a Rat Pup's Hippocampus
