Micro Camera

A micro camera is a compact imaging device that records visual information where conventional cameras are too large, making it valuable for minimally invasive neuroscience research. Its lens focuses incoming light onto a miniature image sensor, which converts photons into digital signals; optical design, illumination, sensitivity, and frame rate determine the resulting spatial and temporal resolution. Integrated into microscopes, endoscopic systems, or head-mounted instruments, micro cameras can capture neural tissue, fluorescence signals, or animal behavior during experiments. Their small size supports less restrictive recordings and more naturalistic studies of brain circuits, while image quality, heat generation, and signal-to-noise ratio remain important design considerations.

We used synchrotron X-ray tomography at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) to non-invasively produce 3D tomographic datasets with a pixel-resolution of 0.7µm. Using volume rendering software, this allows the reconstruction of internal structures in their natural state without the artefacts produced by histological sectioning.
