Mouse Brain Mri

Mouse brain MRI is a noninvasive imaging technique that produces detailed anatomical and functional images of the mouse brain, making it valuable for studying neural structure, development, disease, and treatment response. The method places the animal in a strong magnetic field and uses radiofrequency pulses to alter hydrogen nuclei; as they return to equilibrium, their relaxation signals are detected and converted into images, with different sequences emphasizing tissue properties such as water content and blood flow. In neuroscience research, MRI supports longitudinal studies of brain volume, lesions, connectivity, and functional changes while reducing the need for repeated tissue collection, enabling comparisons across disease models and therapeutic interventions.

The method presented here uses simultaneous positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. In the cerebral hypoxia-ischemia model, dynamic changes in diffusion and glucose metabolism occur during and after injury. The evolving and irreproducible damage in this model necessitates simultaneous acquisition if meaningful multi-modal imaging data are to be acquired.

Functional Neuroimaging Using Ultrasonic Blood-brain Barrier Disruption and Manganese-enhanced MRI

A technique is described for broadly opening the blood-brain barrier in the mouse using microbubbles and ultrasound. Using this technique, manganese can be administered to the mouse brain. Because manganese is an MRI contrast agent that accumulates in depolarized neurons, this approach enables imaging of neuronal activity.
