Neural Tract Disruption

Neural tract disruption is the interruption or alteration of axonal pathways that connect neurons and coordinate communication across the nervous system. It can result from injury, compression, degeneration, inflammation, or developmental abnormalities, disrupting action potential transmission and the flow of sensory, motor, or cognitive information between brain and spinal regions. The resulting deficits depend on the tract’s location and function and may include weakness, sensory loss, impaired coordination, or changes in behavior. Studying neural tract disruption helps researchers link anatomy with function, characterize neurological disease and trauma, assess recovery and plasticity, and evaluate strategies for diagnosis, rehabilitation, and neural repair.

Source: Taylor, M. N. et al. Using Single-Worm Data to Quantify Heterogeneity in Caenorhabditis elegans-Bacterial Interactions. J. Vis. Exp. (2022)This video demonstrates the quantification of intestinal bacterial load variability in individual Caenorhabditis elegans through mechanical disruption. It outlines the steps for sample preparation, mechanical disruption, serial dilution, and colony counting to assess differences in intestinal bacterial load among individual worms.
