Phase-targeted Stimulation

Phase-targeted stimulation is a neuroscience method that delivers electrical, magnetic, or other neural stimulation at a selected phase of an ongoing brain rhythm, allowing intervention to align with endogenous activity. The approach records or estimates oscillatory activity in real time, identifies a phase within the cycle, and triggers stimulation when neural excitability or network responsiveness is expected to differ. By coordinating external input with intrinsic timing, researchers can test causal links between brain rhythms and behavior, influence circuit activity, and optimize neuromodulation strategies. Applications include studying oscillation-based communication, perception, memory, and potential treatments for neurological or psychiatric dysfunction.

Action Potential: Phases of Stimulation

2025

The action potential is a complex electrical event that occurs in excitable cells, such as neurons and muscle cells. It consists of several distinct phases, each with specific characteristics. Resting Phase: In this phase, the cell's membrane is at its resting potential, typically around -70 millivolts (mV) for neurons. Inside the cell, there is a higher concentration of potassium ions (K+) and a lower concentration of sodium ions (Na+). Voltage-gated sodium channels are closed, and...
