Terminal Dendrites

Terminal dendrites are the fine, distal branches at the ends of neuronal dendritic trees that receive and process signals from neighboring cells. Their membranes contain receptors and ion channels that convert synaptic input into local electrical changes, which can be integrated within the branch and influence the neuron’s overall response. In neuroscience, examining terminal dendrites helps researchers understand synaptic connectivity, signal integration, and activity-dependent plasticity. Their structure and function are also relevant to sensory processing and to identifying how altered dendritic branching or synaptic signaling contributes to neurological disorders.

Termination of Translation

2020

The large ribosomal subunit has several important structures essential to translation. These include the peptidyl transferase center (PTC) - which is the site where the peptide bond is formed - and a large, internal, water-filled tube through which the nascent polypeptide moves. This latter structure is called the Peptide Exit Tunnel, and it begins at the PTC and spans the body of the large ribosomal subunit. During translation, as the nascent polypeptide chain is synthesized, it passes through...

Analyzing Dendritic Morphology in Columns and Layers

2017

Here, we show how to analyze dendritic routing of Drosophila medulla neurons in columns and layers. The workflow includes a dual-view imaging technique to improve the image quality and computational tools for tracing, registering dendritic arbors to the reference column array and for analyzing the dendritic structures in 3D space.

Calcium is a ubiquitous messenger in the nervous system, essential for triggering neurotransmitter release and changes in synaptic strength. Here we demonstrate a technique for loading Ca2+-indicators into Drosophila nerve terminals. We also demonstrate fabrication of the required apparatus and emphasize points critical for the technique's success.
