Tibial Nerve

The tibial nerve is a major branch of the sciatic nerve that carries motor and sensory signals between the spinal cord and the posterior leg and sole of the foot. Arising from spinal roots L4–S3, it travels through the posterior compartment of the leg, supplies muscles responsible for plantar flexion and toe movement, and conveys sensation from the plantar foot; its axons transmit information through action potentials and synaptic signaling. In neuroscience and clinical research, the tibial nerve is examined through anatomical dissection, nerve-conduction studies, electrophysiology, and stimulation to investigate motor control, peripheral neuropathy, tarsal tunnel syndrome, and neurorehabilitation.

Source: Brakkee, E. M., et al. Surgery and Behavioral Testing in the Tibial Neuroma Transposition Model in Rats. J. Vis. Exp. (2023).This video demonstrates a procedure to generate a rat tibial neuroma transposition (TNT) model. After exposing the tibial nerve in the hind leg of an anesthetized rat, transect the nerve. Next, create a subcutaneous tunnel, thread the severed nerve through the tunnel, and suture it in place. In the absence of a target for reinnervation, disorganized axonal...

Surgical Angiogenesis in Porcine Tibial Allotransplantation: A New Large Animal Bone Vascularized Composite Allotransplantation Model

Currently any kind of vascularized composite allotransplantation depends on long-term-immunosuppression, difficult to support for non-life-critical indications. We present a new porcine tibial VCA model that can be used to study bone VCA and demonstrate the use of surgical angiogenesis to maintain bone viability without the need of long-term immune-modulation.
