Uniform Field Excitation

Uniform field excitation is a method of applying an electric field with approximately constant strength and direction across a neural preparation. It matters because it provides a controlled way to examine how external fields alter neuronal excitability. The field changes membrane polarization along the neuron, with effects shaped by cellular orientation, field strength, and exposure duration; sufficient polarization can activate voltage-gated ion channels and trigger action potentials. In neuroscience, this approach supports studies of single-neuron and network responses, electrical neuromodulation, and computational models of stimulation, helping connect physical field parameters to measurable changes in brain activity.

Electric Field of a Non Uniformly Charged Sphere

Gauss's law states that the electric flux through any closed surface equals the net charge enclosed within the surface. This law is beneficial for determining the expressions for the electric field for a particular charge distribution if the electric flux is known. Consider a non-uniformly charged sphere, for which the density of charge depends only on the distance from a point in space and not on the direction. Such a sphere has a spherically symmetrical charge distribution. Here, the electric...

Electric Potential Energy in a Uniform Electric Field

When an electric field accelerates a free positive charge, it acquires kinetic energy. This process is analogous to an object being accelerated by a gravitational field as if the charge were going down an electrical hill where its electric potential energy is converted into kinetic energy, although, of course, the sources of the forces are very different. The electrostatic or Coulomb force acting on the positive test charge is conservative, which means that the work done on a test charge is...

Neuronal cultures are a good model for studying emerging brain stimulation techniques via their effect on single neurons or a population of neurons. Presented here are different methods for stimulation of patterned neuronal cultures by an electric field produced directly by bath electrodes or induced by a time-varying magnetic field.

Uniform Distribution

The uniform distribution is a continuous probability distribution of events with an equal probability of occurrence. This distribution is rectangular. Two essential properties of this distribution are The area under the rectangular shape equals 1. There is a correspondence between the probability of an event and the area under the curve.Further, the mean and standard deviation of the uniform distribution can be calculated when the lower and upper cut-offs, denoted as a and b,...
