Mass Velocity Product

The mass velocity product, commonly called linear momentum, is a vector quantity that describes an object's motion and its resistance to changes in that motion. It is calculated as p = mv, where mass and velocity combine so that increasing either quantity increases momentum, while the velocity direction determines the momentum direction; an object's momentum changes when a net external force acts over time. In physics, momentum analysis supports the study of collisions, recoil, impacts, and projectile motion, where conservation of total momentum helps predict outcomes in isolated systems. The concept also connects force, impulse, and motion across scales, from laboratory experiments to engineering and astrophysical models.

Kinetic Molecular Theory: Molecular Velocities, Temperature, and Kinetic Energy

2020

The kinetic molecular theory qualitatively explains the behaviors described by the various gas laws. The postulates of this theory may be applied in a more quantitative fashion to derive these individual laws. Collectively, the molecules in a sample of gas have average kinetic energy and average speed; but individually, they move at different speeds. Molecules frequently undergo elastic collisions in which the momentum is conserved. Since the colliding molecules are deflected off at different...

2014

To achieve population suppression of Aedes aegypti using the RIDL® (Release of Insects carrying a Dominant Lethal) system, large numbers of male mosquitoes need to be released. This requires the use of mass rearing techniques and technology to provide reliable systems to obtain the maximum number of high quality male mosquitoes.

Ultrasound velocimetry is used to study mixing by fluid flow in liquid metal electrodes. The focus of this manuscript is to illustrate the methods used for making precise, spatially-resolved ultrasound measurements while limiting oxidation and controlling and monitoring temperature, applied current, and the heater power being supplied.

Source: Ricardo Mejia-Alvarez and Hussam Hikmat Jabbar, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate the calibration of a flow passage as a flowmeter using a control volume (CV) formulation [1, 2]. The CV analysis focuses on the macroscopic effect of flow on engineering systems, rather than the detailed description that could be achieved with a detailed differential analysis. These two techniques should be...
