Orthogonal Vectors

Orthogonal vectors are vectors that meet at a right angle, characterized by a zero dot product and a geometric relationship of perpendicularity. In Cartesian coordinates, their dot product is calculated by multiplying corresponding components and summing the results; the vectors are orthogonal when this sum equals zero, provided both are nonzero. In physics, orthogonal vectors simplify the description of independent directions, such as perpendicular force components, electric and magnetic fields, or basis directions in space. This principle supports vector decomposition, coordinate transformations, wave and quantum-state analysis, and the construction of orthonormal bases for modeling physical systems.

Orthogonal Trajectories

2026

Orthogonal trajectories describe the geometric relationship between two families of curves that intersect each other at right angles. One illustrative case involves a family of parabolas that open sideways along the x-axis. These curves share a common shape but differ by a scaling parameter, resulting in a set of curves that all pass through the origin and widen at different rates.Determining Orthogonal TrajectoriesTo identify the orthogonal trajectories for these parabolas, the first step...

Source: Nicholas Timmons, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA This experiment demonstrates how vectors add and subtract in multiple directions. The goal will be to analytically calculate the addition or subtraction of multiple vectors and then to experimentally confirm the calculations. A vector is an object with both magnitude and direction. The magnitude of a vector is simply denoted as the length,...

A Protocol for the Production of Integrase-deficient Lentiviral Vectors for CRISPR/Cas9-mediated Gene Knockout in Dividing Cells

We describe the production strategy of integrase-deficient lentiviral vectors (IDLVs) as vehicles for delivering CRISPR/Cas9 to cells. With an ability to mediate quick and robust gene editing in cells, IDLVs present a safer and equally effective vector platform for gene delivery compared to integrase-competent vectors.
