Arousal Reduction

Arousal reduction is the deliberate process of lowering heightened physiological and psychological activation, such as rapid heart rate, muscle tension, vigilance, and anxious distress, to restore a more regulated state. In psychology, techniques such as slow diaphragmatic breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, mindfulness, and calming imagery can shift attention, reduce sympathetic nervous system activity, and support parasympathetic recovery. These methods are used in stress management, anxiety treatment, sleep preparation, and performance settings, where excessive arousal can disrupt concentration, emotional regulation, or decision-making. Measuring changes in self-reported tension and physiological responses helps researchers evaluate effectiveness and tailor interventions to individual needs.

Misattribution of Arousal and Cognitive Dissonance

Source: Peter Mende-Siedlecki & Jay Van Bavel—New York University A host of research in psychology suggests that feelings of psychological arousal may be relatively ambiguous, and under certain circumstances, can lead us to make inaccurate conclusions about our own mental states. Much of this work flows from seminal research conducted by Stanley Schacter and and Jerome Singer. If someone experiences arousal and does not have an obvious, appropriate explanation, they may attempt to explain...

States of Arousal During Infancy

2026

States of arousal describe an infant’s physiological and behavioral condition during sleep, wakefulness, and activity. These states are regulated by the circadian rhythm, an internal biological clock that organizes daily patterns of rest and alertness. During infancy, arousal is commonly classified into five states: regular sleep, irregular sleep, drowsiness, alert inactivity, and waking activity.Regular and Irregular SleepDuring regular sleep, an infant’s eyes remain closed, breathing is slow...

Optimal Arousal Theory

2025

The optimal arousal theory suggests that performance is maximized when an individual experiences a moderate level of arousal. This theory is closely tied to the Yerkes-Dodson law, which illustrates an inverted U-shaped relationship between arousal and performance. The law, formulated by psychologists Robert Yerkes and John Dodson, implies an ideal arousal level for optimal performance, and deviations from this level can lead to declines in effectiveness. Inverted U-Shaped Performance Curve The...

Oxidation-Reduction Reactions

2020

Oxidation–Reduction Reactions Earth’s atmosphere contains about 20% molecular oxygen, O2, a chemically reactive gas that plays an essential role in the metabolism of aerobic organisms and in many environmental processes that shape the world. The term oxidation was originally used to describe chemical reactions involving O2, but its meaning has evolved to refer to a broad and important reaction class known as oxidation–reduction (redox) reactions. Some redox reactions involve the transfer of...

A Reduction of Uncertainty

Lease contracts are essential in reducing financial uncertainties that could impact a firm’s stability. One significant uncertainty is the residual value of an asset at the end of its lease term or useful life. The residual value represents the estimated worth of an asset upon disposal, which can fluctuate due to market conditions and technological changes.By assuming residual value risk, lessors leverage their asset valuation and resale expertise to manage depreciation and market fluctuations.
