Residual Memory Traces

Residual memory traces are enduring remnants of prior experiences that persist after the original event and can influence later thought, emotion, or behavior. In psychology, they reflect changes produced during encoding and consolidation, when neural activity and connections associated with an experience become more stable; retrieval cues can reactivate some of this stored information even when conscious recall is incomplete. Studying residual memory traces helps researchers explain learning and forgetting, implicit influences on judgment and behavior, and the persistence or transformation of memories over time.

In the following experiment we describe a protocol for trace fear conditioning in mice. This type of associative memory includes a trace period that separates the neutral stimulus and the unconditioned stimulus.

The Real-World What-Where-When memory test is a novel episodic memory test, in which participants need to recall which objects have been hidden in which locations on which of two distinct occasions. It is easy to run and is sensitive to normal cognitive aging.

An Introduction to Learning and Memory

2023

Learning is the process of acquiring new information and memory is the retention or storage of that information. Different types of learning, such as non-associative and associative learning, and different types of memory, such as long-term and short-term memory, have been associated with human behaviors. Studying these components in detail helps behavioral scientists understand the neural mechanisms behind these two complex phenomena. JoVE's overview on learning and memory introduces common...

Residual Stresses

2024

Residual stresses reside in a structure even after removing the original stress inducer. This phenomenon often arises from varied plastic deformations across different parts of a structure. Consider a rod stretched beyond its yield point. It will not regain its original length due to permanent deformation. Even after load removal, the rod does not entirely lose stress because of uneven plastic deformations, resulting in residual stresses. The computation of these stresses in structures is...

Residual Plots

A residual plot is a statistical representation of data used to analyze correlation and regression results. It helps verify the requirements for drawing specific conclusions about correlation and regression. To obtain the residual plot, first, the residual for each data value is calculated, which is simply the vertical distance between the observed and the predicted value obtained from the regression equation. When the residual values are plotted against the variable x, it is called a residual...
