Statistical Quality Control

Statistical Quality Control is the use of statistical methods to monitor, maintain, and improve the quality and consistency of processes, products, and services. It distinguishes expected common-cause variation from unusual assignable-cause variation by analyzing measurements collected over time, often with control charts and sampling methods. These tools help determine whether a process remains stable, identify problems before defects increase, and evaluate how well performance meets specifications. Used in manufacturing, healthcare, laboratories, and service operations, Statistical Quality Control supports evidence-based process improvement, reduces waste, and provides a foundation for reliable quality management.

Introduction to Statistical Process Control

2025

Statistical Process Control (SPC) is a method used to monitor and control quality within processes, particularly in manufacturing and service delivery, by employing statistical methods. SPC aims to distinguish between natural (common cause) variation and variation due to specific changes or events (special cause), allowing for timely improvements and sustained quality. The control chart, a pivotal tool in SPC, visually displays data over time alongside a central line of upper and lower control...

Quality control is one of the three cyclical quality assurance activities that help keep a system under statistical control. Typical quality control activities include creating quality control charts, conducting proficiency testing, and documenting and archiving results. Quality control helps track data, visualize trends, and identify variations, making it easier to detect deviations that may affect the accuracy of an analysis. One way to do this is by generating a quality control chart, which...

2016

The social amoebae Dictyostelium discoideum has recently been established as a system to study protein misfolding and proteostasis. Here, we describe a new imaging-based methodology to study temperature-induced protein aggregation and the cellular stress response in D. discoideum.

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University The visual environment contains massive amounts of information involving the relations between objects in space and time; certain objects are more likely to appear in the vicinity of other objects. Learning these regularities can support a wide array of visual processing, including object recognition. Unsurprisingly, then, humans appear to learn these regularities automatically, quickly, and without conscious awareness. The name...
