Matthias Riess

Professor of Anesthesiology and Pharmacology
Matthias Riess, MD, PhD, FASA, is a physiologist, board-certified anesthesiologist and Professor of Anesthesiology and Pharmacology at Vanderbilt University and its Medical Center in Nashville, TN, USA. Prof. Riess received his MD degree from the University of Freiburg, Germany, and his PhD degree from the Department of Physiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin, WI, USA. Prof. Riess is recognized nationally and internationally for his work on mechanisms of cardioprotection and improving survival following cardiac arrest. Besides clinical obligations at Vanderbilt and the TVHS VAMC, he has been funded for his research by the Department of Veterans Affairs, the American Heart Association and the National Institutes of Health and has authored and co-authored over 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals. Prof. Riess is a member and leader of multiple professional organizations and serves as a reviewer for various journals and grant-funding agencies.
