Dried Blood Samples

Dried blood samples are blood specimens collected and preserved in a desiccated form, offering a practical alternative to liquid samples for biochemical analysis. In dried blood spot sampling, a small volume of whole blood is applied to absorbent filter paper and allowed to dry, reducing water activity and helping stabilize selected analytes during storage and transport; laboratories later extract the material for measurement. This approach supports analysis of metabolites, proteins, enzymes, and other biochemical markers while requiring minimal sample volume and simplifying handling. Its portability and lower logistical demands make it valuable for clinical research, epidemiology, screening, and studies involving remote or resource-limited settings.

The preparing and processing of dried blood spots (DBS) for their final analysis are still poorly standardized for most diagnostic applications. To overcome this shortcoming, a comprehensive step-by-step protocol is suggested and subsequently evaluated with regard to its effectiveness for detecting markers of viral infections.
