Peptide Biomarkers

Peptide biomarkers are measurable peptide molecules whose presence, abundance, or structural changes provide information about a biological state, process, or response. In biochemistry, they arise through protein synthesis, enzymatic cleavage, secretion, or post-translational modification, and researchers detect them using methods such as mass spectrometry or immunoassays; their sequences and concentrations can then be compared across samples. Peptide biomarkers support the study of disease mechanisms, treatment responses, and physiological changes, while offering potential indicators for diagnosis and patient stratification. Careful validation is essential because peptide stability, sample handling, and analytical specificity can influence biomarker measurements.

2012

We describe a rat model of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that reveals the persistent alterations in neuroendocrine function and the delayed long-term, exaggerated fear response, characteristic of PTSD patients. The animal model and methods described here are useful for correlating biomarkers in brain nuclei, which are mechanistic but cannot be measured in patients, with biomarkers in peripheral white blood cells, which can.

We developed a technology based on mesoporous silica thin film for the selective recovery of low molecular weight proteins and peptides from human serum. The physico-chemical properties of our mesoporous chips were finely tuned to provide substantial control in peptide enrichment and consequently profile the serum proteome for diagnostic purposes.
