Minimal Media

Minimal media are chemically defined growth media that provide microorganisms with only the essential nutrients required for survival and reproduction, making them useful for controlled biological studies and bioengineering. Their formulations typically contain a carbon source, inorganic salts, water, and selected nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus, or trace-element sources; cells must synthesize any additional compounds they need through endogenous metabolic pathways. By reducing undefined nutrients, minimal media help researchers measure growth requirements, analyze metabolic pathways, and select engineered cells with specific biosynthetic capabilities. In bioengineering, they support reproducible cultivation, metabolic engineering experiments, and evaluation of how genetic modifications alter nutrient use and product formation.

Creating the Minimal Group Paradigm

2023

Source: Julian Wills & Jay Van Bavel—New York University The study of intergroup relations, such as prejudice, conflict, and discrimination, has always been a central topic in social psychology. Does discrimination stem from competition with other groups, a history of conflict, or derogatory stereotypes? Despite an abundance of real-world examples, the ingredients that lead to intergroup discrimination are often unclear. To help solve this problem, a group of psychologists created "minimal...

Microbial growth media are essential tools in microbiology, providing the nutrients and conditions necessary to cultivate and study microorganisms. These media are categorized by their composition, consistency, and functional roles, enabling researchers to investigate microbial physiology, behavior, and interactions.Types and Consistencies of Growth MediaGrowth media can be solid, liquid, or semisolid. Solid media, often agar-based, allow visible colony growth for isolation and enumeration.

Cost Minimization Point

2024

The cost minimization point is where a firm produces a given output at the lowest possible cost, given input prices. It occurs where an isoquant curve is tangent to the lowest achievable isocost line). To illustrate, consider a firm that aims to produce 100 units of output using labor and capital. The isoquant for 100 units shows all efficient combinations of L and K that can produce this output level. Meanwhile, the isocost line reflects all combinations of these inputs that the firm can...
