Non-invasive Stimulation

Non-invasive stimulation is a group of methods that modulate the activity of cells or tissues by delivering energy from outside the body, without implanted electrodes or surgical access. In bioengineering, electrical, magnetic, acoustic, or optical inputs interact with tissue through mechanisms such as induced electric fields, membrane-potential changes, mechanical forces, or light-sensitive molecular pathways. Engineers use these approaches to study neural circuits, support rehabilitation, manage pain, and develop targeted therapies while improving control over stimulation dose and tissue selectivity. Ongoing advances in device design, computational modeling, and real-time feedback aim to make stimulation safer, more precise, and adaptable to individual physiology.

Understanding the malignant behavior of cancer requires creating accurate models of how tumor cells interact with components of the tumor microenvironment, such as macrophages. Here we describe two methods to study glioblastoma cell interaction with tumor associated macrophages and microglia where the effect on glioblastoma invasion is assessed.

Non-Invasive Electrical Brain Stimulation for Modulating Human Motor Neuron Activity

Source: Curado, M. et. al., Non-Invasive Electrical Brain Stimulation Montages for Modulation of Human Motor Function. J. Vis. Exp. (2016)This video demonstrates the setup and mechanism of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) for modulating human motor function. By placing the anode over the primary motor cortex and the cathode over the contralateral supraorbital area, the targeted electrical stimulation increases cortical excitability, enhancing motor neuron activity and improving...
