Optical Ultrasound Detection

Optical ultrasound detection is the measurement of acoustic pressure waves using light rather than conventional piezoelectric transducers, enabling compact and sensitive sensing in bioengineering. In systems based on laser interferometry, fiber optics, or optical resonators, an ultrasound wave changes a material’s refractive index, path length, or membrane position, thereby modulating the intensity, phase, or wavelength of reflected or transmitted light. These optical signals can be converted into spatially resolved images or quantitative pressure measurements. The approach supports photoacoustic imaging, minimally invasive probes, and high-frequency ultrasound sensing, while offering electromagnetic immunity, flexible form factors, and potential integration with biomedical devices.

Optical-resolution photoacoustic microscopy (OR-PAM) is an emerging technology capable of imaging optical absorption contrasts in vivo with cellular resolution and sensitivity. Here, we provide a visualized instruction on the experimental protocols of OR-PAM, including system configuration, system alignment, typical in vivo experimental procedures, and functional imaging schemes.

Multicolor fluorescence detection in droplet microfluidics typically involves bulky and complex epifluorescence microscope-based detection systems. Here we describe a compact and modular multicolor detection scheme that utilizes an array of optical fibers to temporally encode multicolor data collected by a single photodetector.

Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) of the optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) has been shown to be useful in identifying patients with increased intracranial pressure (ICP). However, the non-standardized technique for this POCUS has hampered its use. We present a standardized image acquisition protocol for use in the acute care setting.

Optical detection of ultrasound is impractical in many imaging scenarios because it often requires stable environmental conditions. We demonstrate an optical technique for ultrasound sensing in volatile environments with miniaturization and sensitivity levels appropriate for optoacoustic imaging in restrictive scenarios, e.g. intravascular applications.
