Alpha Beta Gamma Diversity

Alpha, beta, and gamma diversity are complementary measures that describe biodiversity within sites, between sites, and across a broader region. Alpha diversity characterizes the richness and evenness of species in a local community, beta diversity quantifies differences in species composition among communities, and gamma diversity represents the total diversity of a landscape or region. Researchers compare these components using species inventories and diversity metrics to distinguish local variation from spatial turnover and regional species pools. Together, they help explain how habitat conditions, environmental gradients, disturbance, and geographic structure shape biological communities and inform conservation planning, ecosystem assessment, and biodiversity monitoring.

A protocol to evaluate changes in DNA damage levels and DNA repair capacity that may be induced by chronic in vivo low dose irradiation in mouse spleen lymphocytes, by measuring phosphorylated histone H2AX, a marker of DNA double-strand breaks, using flow cytometry is presented.

An Assay for Analyzing Test β-Glucan as an Immunotherapy Strategy against Brain Cancer Cells

This video demonstrates an in vitro assay utilizing β-glucans to activate microglial cells for the production of superoxide radicals, a reactive oxygen species. In brain cancer cells, the generated reactive oxidants actively suppress tumor cell proliferation and induce cell death.

Measuring Biodiversity in Areas with Different Disturbance Regimes ExpandNOTE: In this experiment, you will compare the biodiversity in a less disturbed area against a more highly disturbed area. HYPOTHESES: The experimental hypothesis could be that a less disturbed area will contain a greater diversity of species than a highly disturbed area. The null hypothesis could be that there will be no difference in diversity between less disturbed and highly disturbed areas. To begin, divide into...

Evoked Gamma Oscillations for the Treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease

Begin with a patient diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, wearing a gamma therapy stimulation device. The device consists of an eye-set and headphones.Using the controller, activate the device to deliver auditory and visual stimulation. The visual component emits flickering light at a gamma frequency, while the auditory component produces synchronized sound pulses.Gamma oscillations are brain waves generated by synchronized neuronal firing, crucial for cognition and memory. In AD, these...

Plant Diversity - Concepts

From Water to Land Kingdom Plantae first appeared about 410 million years ago as green algae transitioned from water to land. Though challenging, this transition benefited early colonizers in several ways. Initially, most living organisms (including plants and animals) were ocean dwelling, making aquatic environments crowded and highly competitive. In contrast, land was a relatively uncolonized environment with ample resources and little to no predators or competitors. Terrestrial environments...
