Central Canal

The central canal is a narrow, fluid-filled cavity that runs through the center of the spinal cord and represents a remnant of the embryonic neural tube. Lined by ependymal cells, it connects with the fourth ventricle and contains cerebrospinal fluid, which contributes to the spinal cord’s internal environment and may support limited fluid movement. Its structure and development provide insight into nervous system organization, while abnormal enlargement can produce a syrinx and damage surrounding neural tissue, as seen in syringomyelia. Studying the central canal therefore supports research on spinal cord development, cerebrospinal fluid dynamics, and neurological disease.

Source: Chen, Y., et al. Intrathecal Delivery of Antisense Oligonucleotides in the Rat Central Nervous System. J. Vis. Exp. (2019)This video demonstrates the delivery of a test compound into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) through a catheter implanted in the lumbar spinal column of a rat model. The compound circulates along the CSF to the brain and spinal cord, enters neurons, and offers therapeutic potential.

Capturing Flow-weighted Water and Suspended Particulates from Agricultural Canals During Drainage Events

The Central Dogma

2019

Overview The central dogma of biology states that information encoded in the DNA is transferred to messenger RNA (mRNA), which then directs the synthesis of protein. The set of instructions that enable the mRNA nucleotide sequence to be decoded into amino acids is called the genetic code. The universal nature of this genetic code has spurred advances in scientific research, agriculture, and medicine. RNA Is the Missing Link between DNA and Proteins In the early 1900s, scientists discovered...

The "center" of a data set is also a way of describing location. The two most widely used measures of the "center" of the data are the mean (average) and the median. The words "mean" and "average" are often used interchangeably. The substitution of one word for the other is common practice. The technical term is "arithmetic mean" and "average" is technically a center location. However, in practice among non-statisticians, "average" is commonly accepted for "arithmetic mean." Another measure of...
