Gametes

Gametes are specialized reproductive cells, such as sperm and eggs, that carry one set of chromosomes and transmit genetic information to the next generation. They form through meiosis, a reduction division that halves chromosome number and generates genetic variation through homologous chromosome pairing, crossing over, and independent assortment. During fertilization, two haploid gametes fuse to restore the diploid chromosome number and begin development of a new organism. Studying gametes helps biologists explain inheritance, sexual reproduction, fertility, chromosome abnormalities, and patterns of genetic diversity across populations.

In vitro fertilization is a commonly used technique with a variety of model organisms to maintain lab populations and produce synchronized embryos for downstream applications. Here, we present a protocol that implements this technique for different populations of the Mexican tetra fish, Astyanax mexicanus.

Sexual Selection Class Simulation ExpandNote: In this activity, you and your classmates will portray a sexually reproducing population consisting of an equal number of male and female animals. You will simulate several different mating scenarios to determine how relative quality, attractiveness, sex, and parental commitment affect mate choice and reproductive success. The goal of this activity is to maximize your progeny. Hypotheses: There are several overall hypotheses for female and male...

Determining Roles and Making Gamete Packages for Class ExpandFirst determine the quantity of materials needed based on the class size. This activity can easily be scaled up or down. In Table 1, options are listed for 30, 20 or 10 students. Click Here to download Table 1 NOTE: You may easily create a custom number by following these simple guidelines. Ensure an equal male-to-female ratio. Designate the majority as average quality individuals. Make the number of high- and low-quality...

Genetic Crosses

To dissect genetic processes or create organisms with novel suites of traits, scientists can perform genetic crosses, or the purposeful mating of two organisms. The recombination of parental genetic material in the offspring allows researchers to deduce the functions, interactions, and locations of genes. This video will examine how genetic crosses were influential in developing Mendel's three laws of inheritance, which form the basis of our understanding of genetics. One genetic crossing...

Lampbrush Chromosomes

In 1882, Flemming observed lampbrush chromosomes (LBC) in salamander eggs. Later in 1892, Rückert observed LBCs in shark egg cells and coined the term "lampbrush chromosomes" because they looked like brushes used to clean kerosene lamps. LBCs are made up of two pairs of conjugating homologous chromatids. Each chromatid consists of alternatively positioned regions of condensed-inactive chromatin and loosely placed-active side loops, which can be contracted and extended. The loops resemble the...
