Metabolite Concentration

Metabolite concentration is the amount of a small molecule present in a defined biological sample, cell, tissue, or fluid at a given time. It reflects the balance between metabolic production, consumption, transport, storage, and chemical breakdown, so changes can reveal shifts in pathway activity or cellular state. Researchers quantify metabolites using methods such as chromatography and mass spectrometry to profile energy metabolism, biosynthesis, signaling, and disease-associated changes. Comparing concentrations across conditions helps identify metabolic responses, characterize physiological processes, evaluate drug effects, and develop biomarkers for biological research and clinical investigation.

2012

A method for metabolite extraction from microbial planktonic communities is presented. Whole community sampling is achieved by filtration onto specially prepared filters. After lyophilization, aqueous-soluble metabolites are extracted. This approach allows for application of environmental metabolomics to trans-omics investigations of natural or experimental microbial communities.

We describe here the procedures for the extraction and purification of mRNA and metabolites from Drosophila heads. We are applying these techniques to better understand the cellular perturbations underlying neuronal degeneration. These methodologies can be easily scaled and adapted for other "omic" projects.

Detection of Human Fecal Metabolites Using a Bacterial Biosensor

Begin with a bacterial biosensor culture suspended in a medium. These engineered bacteria produce a transcription factor that, upon binding to a specific fecal metabolite, activates a promoter associated with a fluorescent reporter gene.To this culture, add a filtered human fecal sample containing metabolites, such as lactate, that are involved in host-microbiome interactions.Dilute this mixture with a fresh medium to maintain an optimal reaction volume.Incubate without shaking to mimic the...

Concentration Cells

A concentration cell is a type of a voltaic cell constructed by connecting two almost identical half-cells, both based on the same half-reaction and using the same electrode, differing only in the concentration of one redox species. A concentration cell's potential, therefore, is determined only by the concentration difference of the particular redox species. Consider the following voltaic cell: From the given information, the cell potential of this concentration cell can be calculated using...
