Copd-associated Genes

COPD-associated genes are genes whose variants or altered activity influence susceptibility to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, disease progression, or lung-function decline. They can affect how airway and lung cells respond to smoke and other irritants by modifying inflammatory signaling, oxidative-stress responses, epithelial injury, and tissue repair. In cancer research, these genes help investigators examine biological links between chronic lung damage and tumor development, identify molecular biomarkers, and distinguish inherited risk from changes acquired during disease. Studying their expression and interactions may improve risk assessment and reveal therapeutic targets shared by COPD, inflammation, and lung cancer.

COPD: Pathogenesis and Clinical Features

2024

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a group of lung conditions that progressively worsen over time, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. This cluster of diseases collectively leads to a gradual and irreversible decline in lung function over time. The primary cause for the onset of COPD is cigarette smoking and exposure to air pollution. These hazardous factors initiate a chain reaction within the lungs, resulting in chronic inflammation, damage to the airways, and a...

COPD: Management Using Bronchodilators and Corticosteroids

Chronic obstructive pulmonary isease (COPD) involves a group of progressive lung disorders characterized by persistent airflow limitation and chronic respiratory symptoms. Asthma-COPD Overlap Syndrome (ACOS), encompassing features of both asthma and Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), is a group of progressive lung disorders that includes chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and refractory (non-reversible) asthma. ACOS leads to complex clinical presentations that combine the inflammatory...

This procedure shows how to use the Gene Pulser MXcell electroporation system to rapidly and easily identify the best electroporation conditions for mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) or other primary cells. Considerations for troubleshooting are also discussed in the associated video.

Gene Families

2020

Gene families consist of groups of genes proposed to have originated from a common ancestor. Typically these arise through events in which a gene or genes are mistakenly duplicated during cell division. Unlike their parent genes (which are subject to selection pressure to maintain function), these gene copies do not need to preserve their sequences and may evolve at a relatively faster rate. Occasionally these regions can be adapted to take on new roles within the organism, becoming novel genes...
