Surface Coil Imaging

Surface coil imaging is an MRI technique that uses a localized radiofrequency receiver placed close to the body region of interest to produce detailed anatomical images. Because the coil sits near the tissues being examined, it detects stronger magnetic resonance signals and can improve signal-to-noise ratio and spatial detail compared with more distant receivers, although sensitivity decreases with depth. In cancer research, this approach supports visualization and characterization of superficial tumors, lymph nodes, and other localized abnormalities, helping researchers assess tumor structure, treatment-related changes, and disease progression. Its targeted sensitivity also makes it useful for preclinical studies and specialized imaging protocols.

A procedure for studying transient flows near boundaries using high-resolution, high-speed particle image velocimetry (PIV) is described here. PIV is a non-intrusive measurement technique applicable to any optically accessible flow by optimizing several parameter constraints such as the image and recording properties, the laser sheet properties, and analysis algorithms.

Swarming motility is influenced by physical and environmental factors. We describe a two-phase protocol and guidelines to circumvent the challenges commonly associated with swarm assay preparation and data collection. A macroscopic imaging technique is employed to obtain detailed information on swarm behavior that is not provided by current analysis techniques.
