Colonoscopy Tumor Monitoring

Colonoscopy tumor monitoring is the repeated endoscopic assessment of colorectal tumors and the surrounding intestinal lining to document disease status over time. During the procedure, a flexible camera provides direct visualization of the colon, while targeted biopsies allow tissue examination for malignant cells, treatment-related changes, or new lesions. Serial examinations can help researchers and clinicians evaluate tumor growth, regression, recurrence, and response to therapies, alongside pathological and molecular findings. In cancer research, this approach supports longitudinal studies of tumor behavior, improves characterization of disease progression, and helps assess the effectiveness of surgical, drug-based, or localized interventions.

The colon, or large intestine, is the final segment of the digestive system. Its primary functions include absorbing water and vitamins produced by gut bacteria and transforming waste from liquid to solid to form stool. In adults, the large intestine is approximately 5 feet long and consists of four main sections: Ascending Colon: Rises upward on the right side of the abdomen. Transverse Colon: Stretches from the ascending colon across the body to the left side. Descending Colon: Travels...

(2019)This video demonstrates the use of optical coherence tomography (OCT) to monitor tumor spheroids in a multi-well plate by capturing high-resolution cross-sectional images. By analyzing light reflections from cellular structures, OCT constructs 3D models to assess morphological features like size and shape while also...

To study in vivo tumor growth and tumor microenvironment, we used a syngeneic and orthotopic mouse model of ovarian cancer in immunocompetent animals. We transduced a mouse tumor cell line (MOV1) with Katushka fluorescent protein (MOV1KAT) and here we show its orthotopic implantation in ovary and in vivo imaging.

Over the past few years, new generation endoscopes have emerged as important diagnostic research aids for evaluating murine colitis and colorectal tumors. We present herein a detailed protocol for endoscopic assessment of inflammation and colorectal tumors in mice, as well as a novel scoring system that uses decimal identifiers to document the endoscopic severity of colitis and colorectal tumors.
