Umbelliferone

Umbelliferone is a naturally occurring coumarin derivative, also called 7-hydroxycoumarin, found in several plants and recognized for its distinctive fluorescence and biological activity. Its conjugated ring system absorbs ultraviolet light and emits blue fluorescence, while the hydroxyl group contributes to chemical reactivity and interactions that can influence cellular processes. In cancer research, investigators evaluate umbelliferone for effects on tumor-cell proliferation, migration, oxidative balance, and programmed cell death using cultured cells and molecular assays. These studies assess its potential as a lead compound or mechanistic probe, while clarifying how structure, dose, and cellular context shape its anticancer activity.
