Cartridge-based Technique

Cartridge-based technique is a chemistry method that uses a prepacked, often disposable cartridge to contain sorbents, reagents, or reactive materials during sample processing. A sample is passed through the cartridge under controlled flow, allowing selected compounds to interact with the internal material while unwanted components are retained, removed, or separated; changing the solvent or operating conditions can then release or transform the target analyte. This format supports sample preparation, purification, extraction, and chemical analysis with reduced handling and reproducible workflows. Its modular design can improve throughput, limit cross-contamination, and enable automated processing in research and analytical laboratories.

We describe a protocol for filtration of water samples with a filter cartridge and extraction of environmental DNA (eDNA) without having to cut open the housing to remove the filter. This protocol is developed for metabarcoding eDNA from fishes, but is also applicable to eDNA from other organisms.

A Microfluidic Cartridge-Based Detection System for Allergen-Specific Immunoglobulin E

This video demonstrates a protocol for detecting serum-specific immunoglobulin E using a microfluidic cartridge-based chemiluminescence system. Serum IgEs interact with distinct allergens immobilized in the reaction zone of the cartridge, which are subsequently detected with peroxidase-conjugated anti-IgE antibodies and a chemiluminescent substrate, allowing simultaneous detection of multiple allergen-specific IgEs.

Measurement Accuracy The ability to repeat an experiment and get the same results, or reproducibility, is essential in scientific research. However, it’s impossible to repeat an experiment if you don’t know how you did it. Thus, scientists keep detailed records of their experiments in lab notebooks. These records include important information like the amount of each material used and descriptions of each step of the procedure. Equipment, like balances and volumetric or graduated glassware, is...

Zebrafish Microinjection Techniques

2023

One of the major advantages to working with zebrafish (Danio rerio) is that their genetics can be easily manipulated by microinjection of early stage embryos. Using this technique, solutions containing genetic material or knockdown constructs are delivered into the blastomeres: the embryonic cells sitting atop the yolk of the newly fertilized egg. Delivery into the cytoplasm is achieved either through direct injection into the blastomere, or via natural cytoplasmic movements that occur after a...
