Liquid Cell Fabrication

Liquid cell fabrication is the process of constructing a sealed microdevice that confines a liquid sample between thin, compatible windows while preserving access for imaging or chemical measurement. It typically combines microfabrication, spacer patterning, window bonding, and fluidic integration to create a controlled chamber whose thickness, pressure, and composition support the intended experiment; in transmission electron microscopy, electron-transparent membranes allow probes to pass through the liquid. In chemistry, these cells enable in situ studies of nucleation, crystal growth, corrosion, catalysis, and electrochemical reactions, linking dynamic molecular or nanoscale changes to reaction conditions and improving control of measurements in realistic liquid environments.

This study presents a methodology to prepare 3D, biodegradable, foam-like cell scaffolds based on biocompatible side-chain liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs). Confocal microscopy experiments show that foam-like LCEs allow for cell attachment, proliferation, and the spontaneous alignment of C2C12s myoblasts.

An experimental method to measure geometrical parameters and the apparent advancing contact angles describing capillary wicking in unidirectional synthetic and natural fabrics is proposed. These parameters are mandatory for the determination of the capillary pressures that must be taken into account for liquid composite molding (LCM) applications.

We demonstrate the preparation of siloxane-based and epoxy-based liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) and LCE nanocomposites. The LCEs are characterized with respect to reversible strain, liquid crystal ordering, and stiffness. As a potential application, we demonstrate their use as shape-responsive substrates in a custom device for active cell culture.

The tissue-specific extracellular matrix (ECM) is a key mediator of cell function. This article describes methods for synthesizing pure ECM-derived foams and microcarriers that are stable in culture without the need for chemical crosslinking for applications in advanced 3D in vitro cell culture models or as pro-regenerative bioscaffolds.
