Combinatorial Chemistry

Combinatorial chemistry is a strategy for creating large collections of related molecules and evaluating them efficiently, making it valuable for identifying compounds with useful chemical or biological properties. It generates molecular libraries through systematic combinations of building blocks, often using parallel synthesis or split-and-mix methods, followed by screening to identify active candidates. In chemistry and pharmaceutical research, this approach accelerates lead discovery, structure–activity relationship studies, and optimization of promising compounds. It can also support the development of catalysts, polymers, and functional materials by rapidly comparing many structural variants under controlled conditions.

Combinatorial Gene Control

2020

Combinatorial gene control is the synergistic action of several transcriptional factors to regulate the expression of a single gene. The absence of one or more of these factors may lead to a significant difference in the level of gene expression or repression. The expression of more than 30,000 genes is controlled by approximately 2000-3000 transcription factors. This is possible because a single transcription factor can recognize more than one regulatory sequence. The specificity in gene...

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Neal Abrams — SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry Transition metals are found everywhere from vitamin supplements to electroplating baths. Transition metals also make up the pigments in many paints and compose all minerals. Typically, transition metals are found in the cationic form since they readily oxidize, or lose electrons, and are surrounded by electron donors called ligands. These ligands do not form ionic or covalent bonds with the metal center,...
