Copolymerization

Copolymerization is the chemical process of forming a polymer from two or more different monomer species, allowing materials scientists to combine structural features in one macromolecule. During the reaction, monomers join through chain-growth or step-growth mechanisms, while their relative reactivity, feed composition, and reaction conditions influence the sequence and distribution of repeating units. These factors can produce random, alternating, block, or graft copolymers with tailored flexibility, strength, chemical resistance, or thermal behavior. In chemistry and materials science, copolymerization supports the design of plastics, elastomers, coatings, adhesives, membranes, and biomedical materials with properties that single-monomer polymers may not provide.

2025

Proteinases are vital for bacterial pathogenesis, enabling invasion and immune evasion. Single-step extraction of cytoplasmic and membrane proteins of bacteria in their active form is harrowing. This video article demonstrates the extraction of whole cellular proteins of Leptospira for zymography analysis to detect and characterize gelatinases.

This video demonstrates the zymography gel electrophoresis technique to assess the activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) present in cell culture supernatant. The active MMPs degrade the MMP-specific substrate embedded in a polyacrylamide gel, which appears as clear bands against a dark stained background following staining.
