Lactones

Lactones are cyclic esters formed when a hydroxy carboxylic acid undergoes intramolecular esterification, creating a ring that links its hydroxyl and carboxyl groups. Their properties depend on ring size, substitution, and strain, while the ester bond can undergo hydrolysis or alcoholysis to open the ring and regenerate functional groups. In chemistry, lactones serve as useful intermediates in organic synthesis and appear in natural products, pharmaceuticals, fragrances, and biodegradable polymers. Studying their formation, reactivity, and ring-opening behavior helps researchers control molecular structure and develop compounds with targeted chemical and biological properties.

To improve our knowledge of cellular and molecular neotissue formation, a murine model of the TEVG was recently developed. The grafts were implanted as infrarenal vena cava interposition grafts in C57BL/6 mice. This model achieves similar results to those achieved in our clinical investigation, but over a far shortened time-course.

Grignard Reaction

2023

Source: Vy M. Dong and Faben Cruz, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA This experiment will demonstrate how to properly carry out a Grignard reaction. The formation of an organometallic reagent will be demonstrated by synthesizing a Grignard reagent with magnesium and an alkyl halide. To demonstrate a common use of a Grignard reagent, a nucleophilic attack onto a carbonyl will be performed to generate a secondary alcohol by forming a new C-C bond.
