Radial Axial Viewing

Radial axial viewing is an observation strategy in analytical chemistry that changes how emission from an inductively coupled plasma is collected, allowing measurements to be optimized for sensitivity, concentration range, and sample matrix. In radial viewing, the spectrometer observes the plasma from the side, whereas axial viewing collects light along its central length; this difference changes the observed emission path, background contribution, and effective sensitivity. Comparing or selecting these geometries helps analysts measure major and trace elements in solutions and complex samples, manage spectral interference, and adapt ICP optical emission spectroscopy to different analytical demands. The approach remains important for balancing detection limits with robust quantitative performance.

We illustrate the use of a constant force axial optical tweezers to explore the mechanical properties of short DNA molecules. By stretching DNA axially, we minimize steric hindrances and artifacts arising in conventional lateral manipulation, allowing us to study DNA molecules as short as ~100 nm.

We have developed a device (Twister) to study the regulation of tonic muscle activity during active postural maintenance. Twister measures torsional resistance and muscular responses in standing subjects during twisting of the body axis. The device can be flexibly configured to study various aspects of tonic control across the neck, trunk, and/or hips.

General Case of Eccentric Axial Loading

2024

Unsymmetrical bending occurs when the bending moment applied to a structural member does not align with its principal axis. This misalignment leads to complex stress distributions and deflection patterns that differ from symmetrical bending, which are essential for designing structures to withstand different loading conditions. Consider a member subjected to equal and opposite forces that are applied along a line that does not coincide with the member's neutral axis. In unsymmetrical bending,...

Overview of the Axial Skeleton

2025

The skeleton is subdivided into two major divisions—the axial skeleton and the appendicular skeleton. The axial skeleton forms the vertical, central axis of the body. It includes all of the bones of the head, neck, chest, and back. It protects the brain, spinal cord, heart, and lungs. It also serves as the attachment site for muscles that move the head, neck, and back and for muscles that act across the shoulder and hip joints to move their corresponding limbs. The axial skeleton of the adult...
