Shale Oil Analysis

Shale oil analysis is the chemical characterization of liquid hydrocarbons produced from oil shale or shale formations, providing insight into composition, quality, origin, and processing behavior. Analysts separate and measure hydrocarbon fractions and identify compounds using techniques such as gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, spectroscopy, and elemental analysis; these methods reveal properties including carbon distribution, heteroatom content, and contaminant levels. In chemistry and energy research, the results support resource evaluation, refining decisions, process optimization, and environmental assessment. Comparing molecular composition before and after treatment also helps researchers understand upgrading reactions and improve the efficiency and sustainability of shale oil utilization.

The low-energy water-accommodated fraction (LEWAF) of crude oil is a challenging system to analyze, because over time, this complex mixture undergoes chemical transformations. This protocol illustrates methods for the preparation of the LEWAF sample and for performing photo-irradiation and chemical analysis by trapped ion mobility spectrometry–FT-ICR MS.
