Ruthenium Monomer

A ruthenium monomer is a molecular building block containing a ruthenium center, typically coordinated by ligands that determine its structure, stability, and reactivity. Its chemical behavior depends on ligand exchange, metal–ligand bonding, and changes in the ruthenium oxidation state, allowing the complex to participate in coordination, catalytic, or polymer-forming reactions. Ruthenium monomers are studied in organometallic chemistry as precursors for metal-containing polymers and catalysts, where their controlled reactivity can support bond formation, redox transformations, and selective chemical synthesis. Understanding their coordination environment helps researchers design materials and reactions with tailored electronic, optical, and catalytic properties.

Ruthenium phosphine complexes are widely used for homogeneous catalytic reactions such as hydrogenations. The synthesis of a series of novel tridentate ruthenium complexes bearing the N-triphos ligand N(CH2PPh2)3 is reported. Additionally, the stoichiometric reaction of a dihydride Ru–N-triphos complex with levulinic acid is described.

Lipid polyesters constitute the structural components of two cell wall modifications, the plant cuticle and suberin-containing diffusion barriers. In this video, we describe a method to depolymerize cutin from whole delipidated leaves. The method can be applied to investigating mutants compromised in either cutin or suberin biosynthesis.
