Surface Alteration Layer

A surface alteration layer is a chemically modified region that forms at a material’s outermost surface when it interacts with its surrounding environment. Reactions such as oxidation, dissolution, adsorption, ion exchange, or precipitation change the layer’s composition, structure, and protective properties, often producing a gradual transition between the original material and the environment. In chemistry, analyzing these layers helps explain corrosion, weathering, mineral transformation, and the durability of glasses, metals, ceramics, and other solid materials. Their composition and thickness can reveal reaction pathways and guide strategies for controlling surface reactivity, improving protection, and designing materials with targeted interfacial behavior.

The endothelial glycocalyx/endothelial surface layer is ideally studied using intravital microscopy. Intravital microscopy is technically challenging in a moving organ such as the lung. We demonstrate how simultaneous brightfield and fluorescent microscopy may be used to estimate endothelial surface layer thickness in a freely-moving in vivo mouse lung.

Biomimetics has been previously used as a tool to study leaf-microorganism interactions. However, no such tool exists for roots. Here, we develop a protocol to form synthetic surfaces mimicking root surface microstructure for the study of root-environment interactions.

Layer-by-layer Collagen Deposition in Microfluidic Devices for Microtissue Stabilization

The creation of functional microtissues within microfluidic devices requires the stabilization of cell phenotypes by adapting traditional cell culture techniques to the limited spatial dimensions in microdevices. Modification of collagen allows the layer-by-layer deposition of ultrathin collagen assemblies that can stabilize primary cells, such as hepatocytes, as microfluidic tissue models.

Experimental Implementation of a New Composite Fabrication Method: Exposing Bare Fibers on the Composite Surface by the Soft Layer Method

A protocol to expose bare fibers on the composite surface by eliminating resin rich area is presented. The fibers are exposed during fabrication of the composites, not by the post surface treatment. The exposed carbon composites exhibit high electrical conductivity in the through-thickness direction and high mechanical property.

Thin-Layer Chromatography - Concepts

Chromatography Chromatography is a technique used in organic chemistry to separate compounds in a mixture based on their differences in solubility between two different phases. The concept is similar to liquid-liquid extraction, except in chromatography, the two phases consist of the stationary phase and the mobile phase. The stationary phase is a solid — typically a microscale hydrogel bead — while the mobile phase is a carrier solvent. In traditional chromatography, the stationary phase is...
