Foreign Body Ingestion

Foreign body ingestion is the accidental or intentional swallowing of a nonfood object, a clinical problem that can range from harmless passage through the gastrointestinal tract to life-threatening obstruction or perforation. After ingestion, the object travels through the esophagus, stomach, and intestines, but its size, shape, composition, and location determine whether it passes spontaneously or becomes lodged and injures tissue. Clinical assessment uses the history, physical examination, and appropriate imaging to identify complications and guide observation, endoscopic removal, or urgent intervention. Understanding this process supports timely risk assessment and management, particularly in children and patients with impaired swallowing or altered anatomy.

Physiology of the Gastrointestinal System I: Ingestion and Propulsion

2025

The physiology of the gastrointestinal system begins with ingestion as food enters the mouth. Taste and Salivation: Ingestion is both mechanical and sensory. Taste buds on the tongue detect flavors, triggering brain signals that stimulate salivary glands to produce more saliva. This response is essential for appetite regulation and digestive enzyme secretion. Role of Teeth in Mastication: Different tooth types have specific roles in mechanical digestion. Incisors cut, canines tear, and...

Candida albicans Biofilm Development on Medically-relevant Foreign Bodies in a Mouse Subcutaneous Model Followed by Bioluminescence Imaging

2015

We present an experimental procedure of Candida albicans biofilm development in a mouse subcutaneous model. Fungal biofilms were quantified by determining the number of colony forming units and by a non-invasive bioluminescence imaging, where the amount of light that is produced corresponds with the number of viable cells.

Source: Ketron Mitchell-Wynne, PhD, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA Equilibrium is a special case in mechanics that is very important in everyday life. It occurs when the net force and the net torque on an object or system are both zero. This means that both the linear and angular accelerations are zero. Thus, the object is at rest, or its center of mass is moving at a constant velocity. However, this...
