Heat Shock Gene Expression

Heat shock gene expression is the regulated activation of genes that help cells respond to elevated temperature and other protein-damaging stresses, preserving cellular function during development. When stress disrupts protein folding, heat shock factors become activated, bind heat shock elements in DNA, and stimulate transcription of molecular chaperones and related protective proteins that refold or remove damaged proteins. In developmental biology, this response helps explain how embryos and tissues maintain proteostasis while adapting to changing environments. Studying heat shock gene expression also reveals links between stress signaling, cell fate, development, disease, and the capacity of organisms to survive environmental challenges.

Bacterial Transformation: The Heat Shock Method

2023

Transformation is the process that occurs when a cell ingests foreign DNA from its surroundings. Transformation can occur in nature in certain types of bacteria. In molecular biology, transformation is artificially reproduced in the lab via the creation of pores in bacterial cell membranes. Bacterial cells that are able to take up DNA from the environment are called competent cells. In the laboratory, bacterial cells can be made competent and DNA subsequently introduced by a procedure called...

This procedure describes a quick and easy workflow to introduce siRNA into difficult to transfect cell lines and follow gene expression by real-time PCR. Use of an automated cell counter, multi-well electroporation plate, and automated electrophoresis station provide quick and reliable results without the need for expensive robotic handling.

What is Gene Expression?

2019

Overview Gene expression is the process in which DNA directs the synthesis of functional products, that is, proteins. Cells can regulate gene expression at various stages. It allows organisms to generate different cell types and enables cells to adapt to internal and external factors. Genetic Information Flows from DNA to RNA to Protein A gene is a stretch of DNA that serves as the blueprint for functional RNAs and proteins. Since DNA is made up of nucleotides and proteins consist of amino...
