2d Checkerboard Grating

A 2D checkerboard grating is a periodic array of alternating light and dark square regions that diffracts waves in two perpendicular spatial directions. When illuminated, the grating’s repeating structure imposes phase or amplitude modulation on the incoming wave, producing an ordered diffraction pattern whose angles and intensities depend on the square size, spacing, wavelength, and illumination conditions. In engineering, 2D checkerboard gratings support optical system calibration, spatial resolution testing, imaging analysis, and Fourier-optics studies. Their symmetric geometry makes them useful for evaluating sensor performance, measuring alignment, and characterizing how optical systems transfer spatial information.

The measurement protocol and data analysis procedure are given for obtaining transverse coherence of a synchrotron radiation X-ray source along four directions simultaneously using a single 2-D checkerboard phase grating. This simple technique can be applied for complete transverse coherence characterization of X-ray sources and X-ray optics.

We describe a technique for inscribing identical fiber Bragg gratings into each core of a multicore fiber. This is achieved by introducing an additional surface into the optical path to mitigate lensing by the curved surface of the fiber cladding.

2015

The fabrication of high contrast gratings as the parallel spectrum splitting dispersive element in a concentrated photovoltaic system is demonstrated. Fabrication processes including nanoimprint lithography, TiO2 sputtering and reactive ion etching are described. Reflectance measurement results are used to characterize the optical performance.
