Beam Cross Section

A beam cross section is the shape and dimensions of a beam viewed perpendicular to its longitudinal axis, and it determines how the member carries loads. Its area governs axial stress and weight, while the distribution of material about the neutral axis controls the second moment of area, bending stiffness, and resistance to deflection; cross-sectional geometry also influences shear stress and buckling behavior. Engineers compare rectangular, circular, I-shaped, box, and other sections to balance strength, stiffness, stability, manufacturability, and material use. Selecting an appropriate beam cross section is essential in structural frames, bridges, machines, and lightweight aerospace designs.

Beams

Beams are integral components of structural engineering and construction, designed to support loads applied at various points along their length. These long, straight members can be classified based on geometry, cross-section, support type, and equilibrium condition. Based on geometry, beams can be straight, tapered, or curved. Straight beams are the most common type and have a constant cross-section throughout their length. Tapered beams, on the other hand, have a varying cross-section along...

Deficits in fine motor coordination can be assessed with the balance beam test. Performance on the beam is quantified by the speed at which the beam is traversed and the number of times the mouse slips on the beam.

Genetic Crosses

To dissect genetic processes or create organisms with novel suites of traits, scientists can perform genetic crosses, or the purposeful mating of two organisms. The recombination of parental genetic material in the offspring allows researchers to deduce the functions, interactions, and locations of genes. This video will examine how genetic crosses were influential in developing Mendel's three laws of inheritance, which form the basis of our understanding of genetics. One genetic crossing...

Cryo Electron Microscopes, either Scanning (SEM) or Transmission (TEM), are widely used for characterization of biological samples or other materials with a high water content1. A SEM/Focused Ion Beam (FIB) is used to identify features of interest in samples and extract a thin, electron-transparent lamella for transfer to a cryo-TEM.
