Computer Vision Inspection

Computer vision inspection is the automated analysis of images or video to identify, measure, and classify objects, features, or defects, supporting consistent and efficient quality assessment. A camera captures visual data, while image-processing and computer-vision algorithms enhance the images, extract features such as shape, color, texture, or dimensions, and compare them with predefined criteria or trained models. In engineering, these systems inspect manufactured components, assemblies, surfaces, and production lines for defects, alignment errors, and dimensional variation. By reducing reliance on manual inspection, computer vision inspection can improve repeatability, enable real-time monitoring, support process control, and generate data for diagnosing equipment or manufacturing problems.

Source: Jaideep S. Talwalkar, MD, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT Observation and inspection is fundamental to physical examination and begins at the first point of contact with a patient. While observation and inspection are often used interchangeably, observation is a general term that refers to the careful use of one's senses to gain information. Inspection is an act limited to what one can observe visually, and when referring to physical examination,...

Source: Suneel Dhand, MD, Attending Physician, Internal Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Disorders of the respiratory system with a chief complaint of shortness of breath are among the most common reasons for both outpatient and inpatient evaluation. The most obvious visible clue to a respiratory problem will be whether the patient is displaying any signs of respiratory distress, such as fast respiratory rate and/or cyanosis. In a clinical situation, this will always require...

Source: Suneel Dhand, MD, Attending Physician, Internal Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center The cardiac assessment is one of the core examinations performed by almost every physician whenever encountering a patient. Disorders of the cardiac system are among the most common reasons for hospital admission, with conditions ranging from myocardial infarction to congestive heart failure. Learning a complete and thorough cardiac examination is therefore crucial for any practicing physician.

A Battery of Quantitative Binocular Vision Tests for Adults: Testing Protocols

2026

Here we present a comprehensive battery of tasks to assess binocular vision. Tasks include peripheral stereoacuity and motion-in-depth, which are not assessed by current clinical tests. Incorporating these tasks will provide an in-depth assessment of an individual’s binocularity.
