Fatigue Cracking

Fatigue cracking is the progressive formation and growth of cracks in a material subjected to repeated or fluctuating loads, even when each load is below its single-cycle fracture strength. Localized stress concentrations, surface defects, and microstructural changes can initiate a crack, which then advances incrementally with each load cycle through crack-tip deformation and repeated plastic strain. In engineering, fatigue cracking affects aircraft components, bridges, machinery, pipelines, and other structures exposed to vibration or changing loads. Understanding crack initiation, propagation, and fatigue life supports material selection, structural design, inspection planning, and preventive maintenance, helping reduce unexpected failures and improve reliability.

Fatigue of Metals

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA The importance of studying metal fatigue in civil infrastructure projects was brought into the spotlight by the collapse of the Silver Bridge in Point Pleasant, West Virginia in 1967. The eyebar-chain suspension bridge over the Ohio River collapsed during evening rush hour, killing 46 people as a result of the failure of a single eyebar with a small 0.1-inch defect. The defect reached a...

2016

Fatigue is a common, undertreated and frequently poorly-understood symptom in many diseases and disorders. New preclinical assays of fatigue may help to improve current understanding and future treatment of fatigue. To that end, the current protocol provides a novel means of measuring fatigue-like behavior in the mouse.
