Fixed Mass Fluid

A fixed-mass fluid is a defined quantity of fluid whose mass remains constant within a system boundary, making it a central model in engineering thermodynamics. Although no mass crosses the boundary, energy can transfer as heat or work, while pressure, volume, and temperature may change as the fluid responds to its surroundings. Engineers analyze these systems using conservation of mass and the first law of thermodynamics, often representing the fluid in a piston-cylinder device or closed vessel. This framework supports the study of compression, expansion, heating, cooling, and engine cycles, helping predict energy conversion and system performance.

Conservation of Mass in Fixed, Nondeforming Control Volume

2025

The principle of conservation of mass is fundamental in fluid dynamics and is crucial for analyzing flow within fixed control volumes, such as pipes or ducts. This principle states that the total mass within a control volume remains constant unless altered by the inflow or outflow of mass through the control surfaces. This results in a vital relationship for steady, incompressible flow where the mass entering a system equals the mass leaving it. In the case of a sewer pipe, which can be modeled...

Fixing Double-strand Breaks

2020

The double-stranded structure of DNA has two major advantages. First, it serves as a safe repository of genetic information where one strand serves as the back-up in case the other strand is damaged. Second, the double-helical structure can be wrapped around proteins called histones to form nucleosomes, which can then be tightly wound to form chromosomes. This way, DNA chains up to 2 inches long can be contained within microscopic structures in a cell. A double-stranded break not only damages...
