Lake Edge Measurement

Lake edge measurement is the process of locating and characterizing the boundary between a lake and surrounding land, providing essential data for engineering design, environmental assessment, and shoreline management. Engineers establish this boundary using field surveys, GPS, level measurements, or remote sensing, while documenting water level, shoreline position, bank geometry, and local site conditions because the edge can shift with seasonal and short-term changes. These measurements support reservoir planning, flood-risk evaluation, erosion monitoring, habitat protection, and infrastructure placement. Consistent methods and recorded water conditions improve comparisons over time and help engineers design projects that respond to changing shorelines.

2014

Lake eutrophication is a water quality issue worldwide, making the need to identify and control nutrient sources critical. Laboratory determination of phosphorus release rates from sediment cores is a valuable approach for determining the role of internal phosphorus loading and guiding management decisions.

A technique for laboratory estimation of net trophic transfer efficiency of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners to piscivorous fish from their prey is presented. To maximize applicability of the laboratory results to the field, the piscivorous fish should be fed prey fish that are typically eaten in the field.

Establishment of Microbial Eukaryotic Enrichment Cultures from a Chemically Stratified Antarctic Lake and Assessment of Carbon Fixation Potential

Microbial eukaryotes are both a source of photosynthetically-derived carbon and top predatory species in permanently ice-covered Antarctic lakes. This report describes an enrichment culture approach to isolate metabolically versatile microbial eukaryotes from the Antarctic lake, Lake Bonney, and assesses inorganic carbon fixation potential using a radioisotope assay for Ribulose-1,5-bisphophate carboxylase oxygenase (RubisCO) activity.

Flow Visualization in a Water Tunnel: Observing the Leading-edge Vortex Over a Delta Wing

2023

Source: Jose Roberto Moreto, Gustaaf Jacobs and Xiaofeng Liu, Department of Aerospace Engineering, San Diego State University, San Diego, California The delta wing, shown in Figure 1D, is a popular design in high-speed airplanes due to its superb performance in transonic and supersonic flight regimes. This type of wing has a small aspect ratio and high sweep angle, which reduces drag at high subsonic, transonic and supersonic flight regimes. The aspect ratio is defined as the wing span divided...
