Shear Rate Dependence

Shear rate dependence describes how a material’s response changes as the rate of deformation varies, a fundamental concept in engineering rheology. In a flowing material, shear rate measures the velocity gradient between adjacent layers, while the resulting shear stress reveals whether viscosity remains constant or changes with deformation. Newtonian fluids have rate-independent viscosity, whereas non-Newtonian materials may shear thin, becoming less viscous, or shear thicken as shear rate increases. Characterizing this behavior through rheometry helps engineers select materials, predict flow through pipes and processing equipment, and optimize applications such as polymer manufacturing, coatings, food production, and injection molding.

Temperature Dependence on Reaction Rate

The Collision Theory Atoms, molecules, or ions must collide before they can react with each other. Atoms must be close together to form chemical bonds. This premise is the basis for a theory that explains many observations regarding chemical kinetics, including factors affecting reaction rates. The collision theory is based on the postulates that (i) the reaction rate is proportional to the rate of reactant collisions, (ii) the reacting species collide in an orientation allowing contact between...

Source: Claes, J., et al, In Vitro and In Vivo Model to Study Bacterial Adhesion to the Vessel Wall Under Flow Conditions. J. Vis. Exp. (2015).This video demonstrates an in vivo method for analyzing shear-dependent bacterial adhesion in a live mouse model. Following surgical preparation and catheterization, the mesenteric vasculature is exposed for real-time imaging under a fluorescence microscope. Perfusion with an ionophore and fluorescently labeled bacteria reveals how shear stress triggers...

The Integrated Rate Law: The Dependence of Concentration on Time

2020

While the differential rate law relates the rate and concentrations of reactants, a second form of rate law called the integrated rate law relates concentrations of reactants and time. Integrated rate laws can be used to determine the amount of reactant or product present after a period of time or to estimate the time required for a reaction to proceed to a certain extent. For example, an integrated rate law helps determine the length of time a radioactive material must be stored for its...
