Soft Tissue Contrast

Soft tissue contrast is the ability of an imaging system to distinguish neighboring tissues based on differences in their physical or physiological properties. In magnetic resonance imaging, these differences arise from tissue-dependent proton density and relaxation behavior, which alter signal intensity under selected pulse sequences; other modalities use variations in x-ray attenuation or acoustic response. Engineers optimize contrast through sensor design, energy selection, acquisition parameters, and image reconstruction while balancing spatial resolution, noise, and safety. Improved soft tissue contrast supports the visualization of organs, tumors, vessels, and injury, strengthening diagnosis, treatment planning, biomedical research, and the development of advanced medical imaging technologies.

Tissue biomechanics is important for maintaining cell shape and function and for determining phenotype. This report demonstrates non-destructive mechanical protocols for characterizing elastic and viscoelastic properties of human soft tissues, which can be directly applied to tissue-engineered substrates to allow a close matching of engineered materials to native tissue.
