Sodium Citrate Reduction

Sodium citrate reduction is a wet-chemical method that uses sodium citrate to convert dissolved metal ions into elemental metal, most notably producing colloidal gold nanoparticles. In the widely used citrate reduction process, an aqueous gold salt is heated to boiling while citrate acts as the reducing agent and adsorbs onto newly formed particles, limiting aggregation and stabilizing the colloid. The citrate-to-metal ratio, reactant concentration, temperature, and mixing conditions influence nucleation, particle growth, and final size. In engineering, this method provides a simple, scalable route to tunable nanomaterials for optical sensing, catalysis, biomedical devices, and materials characterization.

Reduction of Alkynes to trans-Alkenes: Sodium in Liquid Ammonia

2023

Alkynes can be reduced to trans-alkenes using sodium or lithium in liquid ammonia. The reaction, known as dissolving metal reduction, proceeds with an anti addition of hydrogen across the carbon–carbon triple bond to form the trans product. Since ammonia exists as a gas (bp = −33°C) at room temperature, the reaction is carried out at low temperatures using a mixture of dry ice (sublimes at −78°C) and acetone. When dissolved in liquid ammonia, an alkali metal, such as sodium, dissociates into a...

Oxidation-Reduction Reactions

Oxidation–Reduction Reactions Earth’s atmosphere contains about 20% molecular oxygen, O2, a chemically reactive gas that plays an essential role in the metabolism of aerobic organisms and in many environmental processes that shape the world. The term oxidation was originally used to describe chemical reactions involving O2, but its meaning has evolved to refer to a broad and important reaction class known as oxidation–reduction (redox) reactions. Some redox reactions involve the transfer of...

Regulation of Sodium and Potassium

2024

The regulation of sodium and potassium ion concentrations in the human body is a complex process governed primarily by hormones such as aldosterone, antidiuretic hormone (ADH), and atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP). Sodium Regulation Sodium ions make up approximately 90% of extracellular cations, with a normal blood plasma concentration of 136–148 mEq/L. A decrease in blood volume and pressure triggers the release of renin from granular cells in the juxtaglomerular complex (JGC), primarily in...
