Thermal Cvd Growth

Thermal CVD growth is a thin-film deposition process that uses heat-driven chemical reactions to form solid materials on a substrate, making it important for engineering surfaces and devices with controlled composition and thickness. In a reactor, volatile precursor gases flow over a heated substrate, where thermal energy promotes precursor decomposition or reaction at the surface; gaseous byproducts are then removed, leaving a deposited film. This approach supports the fabrication of coatings, semiconductor layers, carbon materials, and other functional structures, while process conditions such as temperature, pressure, gas flow, and substrate choice influence growth rate, uniformity, crystallinity, and film quality.

Source: J. Jacob Chavez, Ryan T. Davis, and Taylor D. Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Thermal expansion is extremely important when considering which materials will be used in systems that experience fluctuations in temperature. A high or low thermal expansion in a material may or may not be desirable, depending on the application. For instance, in a common liquid thermometer, a material with a high thermal expansion would be...

Thermal Diffusivity and the Laser Flash Method

Source: Elise S.D. Buki, Danielle N. Beatty, and Taylor D. Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT The laser flash method (LFA) is a technique used to measure thermal diffusivity, a material specific property. Thermal diffusivity (α) is the ratio of how much heat is conducted relative to how much heat is stored in a material. It is related to thermal conductivity (), how much heat is transferred through a material due to a temperature...

Thermal expansion and Thermal stress: Problem Solving

San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge is exposed to temperatures ranging from -15 °C to 40 °C. At its coldest, the main span of the bridge is 1275 m long. Assuming that the bridge is made entirely of steel, what is the change in its length between these temperatures? To solve the problem, first, identify the known and unknown quantities. The initial length (L) of the bridge is 1275 m, the coefficient of linear expansion (α) for steel is 12 x 10-6/°C, and the change in temperature (ΔT) is 55 °C.
