Chemical Wounding

Chemical wounding is a laboratory approach that creates a controlled injury in cells or tissues through exposure to a damaging chemical, enabling researchers to study inflammation, barrier disruption, and repair. The chemical insult can injure cell membranes, alter viability, and release signals that activate immune pathways, while surviving cells respond through migration, proliferation, and restoration of tissue integrity. In immunology and infection research, chemical wounding provides a reproducible model for examining host responses to epithelial damage, pathogen invasion, and inflammatory mediators. It can also support evaluation of antimicrobial treatments, wound-healing interventions, and mechanisms linking tissue injury with susceptibility to infection.

This article provides a detailed and visual description of a methodology for collecting and measuring biochemical inflammatory and nociceptive mediators at the surgical wound site following cesarean delivery. This human bioassay has been used to determine correlations between wound and serum cytokine concentrations and drug-mediated changes in wound cytokines, chemokines and neuropetides.

2025

Porcine corneal ex vivo organ culture and epithelial wound healing provide an economical, ethical, reproducible, and quantitative means for testing the ocular toxicity of chemicals. They also aid in elucidating mechanisms underlying the regulation of epithelialization and tissue repair, and in evaluating therapeutics for treating diabetic keratopathy and delayed wound healing.
