Atherosclerotic Rabbit Model

The atherosclerotic rabbit model is an in vivo experimental system used to study how arterial plaques form and progress, providing a bridge between cellular research and human cardiovascular disease. Researchers typically induce atherosclerosis by feeding rabbits a cholesterol-rich diet, sometimes alongside vascular injury, which promotes lipid accumulation, endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, and plaque development in the arterial wall. This model supports investigation of plaque biology, vascular pathology, imaging methods, and potential therapies aimed at reducing lesion formation or instability. Its relatively accessible anatomy and measurable responses make it valuable for evaluating cardiovascular mechanisms and preclinical interventions.

Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory process. This manuscript illustrates an easy to use ex vivo model to investigate fresh carotid or coronary artery plaques. The ex vivo model allows for the investigation of potential substances on the inflammatory milieu in human atherosclerotic lesions and results can be analyzed by various methods.

The Rabbit Model of Accelerated Atherosclerosis: A Methodological Perspective of the Iliac Artery Balloon Injury

Animal models of atherosclerosis are essential to understand the mechanism and to investigate newer approaches to prevent plaque development or rupture, a leading cause of death in the industrialized world. This protocol uses a combination of balloon injury and cholesterol rich diet to induce atherosclerotic plaques in rabbit iliac artery.

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Anesthesia is an essential component of rabbit surgical and experimental procedures because it prevents pain, reduces stress responses, and helps immobilize the animal during handling and manipulation when general anesthesia is...
